The Poker Hall of Fame has introduced a new induction system for 2026, allowing multiple inductees in one year. Living members will cast four votes each, with final results becoming public and inductees announced during the WSOP Main Event.
The Poker Hall of Fame is set for a significant change after a new induction format was introduced for 2026.
The updated system moves away from the traditional winner-takes-all approach and creates a pathway for multiple candidates to enter the Hall of Fame in the same year.
Nominations for the 2026 Poker Hall of Fame are now open. After the public determines the final eight nominees, the ultimate decision will be made by the 33 living members of the Poker Hall of Fame.
The revised process was announced on The Countdown, the WSOP's official pregame show. Under the new structure, each living Hall of Fame member will receive four votes and may vote for up to four different nominees, casting one vote per player.
The standard for induction has also been clearly defined. Any nominee who receives votes from at least 22 Hall of Fame members will earn automatic induction.
If no nominee reaches the 22-vote requirement, the candidate with the highest overall vote total will claim the single available place in the Hall of Fame.
The change creates the possibility for as many as six of the eight finalists to be inducted during the same year, marking one of the biggest adjustments to the selection process in the Hall of Fame's history.
The updated system has already generated discussion within the poker community.
PokerNews spoke with Poker Hall of Famer Phil Hellmuth, who expressed concerns about the possibility of several players entering at once.
"That's not good," he said. "I think two a year is the right number. They should just let two in per year, I don't care about the voting [system]."
Another major element of the overhaul is increased transparency. The WSOP confirmed that the final voting results will be publicly released.
Making the results available will allow the poker community to see how close each nominee came to induction.
It could also encourage more organised, fan-driven campaigns in future years as supporters rally behind their preferred candidates.
The 2026 Poker Hall of Fame class will be officially announced live on ESPN during the WSOP Main Event final table.
The revised voting structure could also create new opportunities for long-overlooked figures such as Mike Matusow and Matt Savage to gain induction consideration in the years ahead.
